Meeting 3…d5 by taking
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c3 d5 4.exd5 Qxd5
- The mistake
- Recapturing on d5 and letting the queen come to the middle of the board.
- Why it costs
- In every other opening a queen on d5 is chased away by a knight coming to c3 with tempo. Here the pawn is on c3, so there is no chaser: the queen sits in the centre, …Bg4 is next, and White is the one with a problem to solve.
- Instead
- 4.Qa4, the main line. It pins the knight on c6 and holds e4 at the same time, which is the only reason 3.c3 is playable at all.
