Recapturing on e4 with the knight
1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Bc4 Nxe4 4.Nxe4 d5
- The mistake
- Meeting 3…Nxe4 by taking the knight back, as though material were the point.
- Why it costs
- 4…d5 forks the bishop on c4 and the knight on e4, and Black gets the piece straight back with a pawn in the middle of the board and a free game. The whole 3.Bc4 line depends on not doing this.
- Instead
- 4.Qh5, the Frankenstein–Dracula, when 4…Nd6 5.Bb3 keeps a sharp game — or the simple 4.Bxf7+ Kxf7 5.Nxe4 first, which wins the piece back on your terms.
