What is a FEN?

A FEN is one line of text that describes a chess position: where every piece stands, whose turn it is, and a few extra details such as castling rights. Analysis boards show it when you ask to copy the position.

Do I have to paste the whole FEN?

No. The first part, the piece placement such as rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR, is enough for a picture.

PNG or SVG?

Use PNG for slides, documents and chat. SVG is a vector picture that stays sharp at any size, which suits print and websites.
