Questions

What is a FEN?

A FEN is one line of text that describes a chess position: where every piece stands, whose turn it is, which sides may still castle, and a couple of move counters. Analysis boards and engines take a FEN to start from any position.

Which position does it show by default?

The final one, after the last move of the game. Drag the slider to any earlier move, or to the start, to read that position's FEN instead.

Can I turn a FEN back into a picture?

Yes. The FEN to image tool on this site draws any FEN as a board you can save as a PNG or SVG.
