Chess rules

Why did my game end in a draw?

A game is drawn by stalemate, when neither side has enough pieces left to checkmate, when the same position appears three times, after 50 moves each with no capture or pawn move, or when both players agree.

The rule

  1. 1Stalemate: the player to move is not in check and has no legal move.
  2. 2Not enough material: for example king against king, or king and bishop against king. Nobody can checkmate.
  3. 3Repetition: the same position, with the same player to move, appears three times.
  4. 4The 50-move rule: 50 moves by each side with no capture and no pawn move.
  5. 5Agreement: both players agree to a draw.

Questions

Does the repeated position have to come back three times in a row?

No. It is the same position appearing three times at any point in the game, with the same player to move and the same castling and en passant rights. The moves in between do not matter.

Can I still win with a knight and a king?

Not against a lone king: a single knight cannot force checkmate either, so that is a draw. Two knights cannot force it either, though a mate is possible if the other side blunders.

Who declares the draw?

Online, the site usually ends the game for you. Over the board, stalemate and dead positions end the game immediately, while repetition and the 50-move rule have to be claimed by a player.
